Celebrating 105 Years of Service at S I Sealy

This month we celebrate three of our Senior Engineers celebrating huge anniversaries here at S I Sealy. Phil Murphy, Technical Director celebrates 45 years, Steve Dale, Company Director celebrates 35 years, and Mike Robinson, Principal Electrical Engineer celebrates 25 years at the Practice.

Phil Murphy, Technical Director

Phil joined S I Sealy in 1975 and during this time Phil has become one of the most respected Mechanical Engineers in the North West. Phil has witnessed many changes in his time at S I Sealy with technology taking a large part of the industries development. Phil first started working at S I Sealy when the normal way of practice was to review full-size hand drawings. Through the years, with technology advances and the pandemic forcing the world to go fully digital, Phil has learnt to embrace technological advances, now working with VR surveys, REVIT, BIM360 and Navisworks. Throughout his time at S I Sealy Phil has gained experience and expertise in the field of healthcare, extra care, and later living to become the Healthcare Technical Director.

Phil Murphy commented: “It’s not normal for anyone to stay with one company for any length of time these days, but we have a lot of staff who have been here for long periods. I would like to think it is the good atmosphere we create here at S I Sealy even with the madness of the deadlines within the industry.”

Steve Dale, Company Director

Steve joined the Practice in 1985 as a Senior Design Engineer and quickly progressed through the ranks to become a company director in 1994. Prior to joining S I Sealy, Steve worked as an Electrican on site at the GMEX in Manchester Central in 1985, managing the installation of electrical infrastructure. During this summer and through the pandemic, he was back at the GMEX in Centre altering services which he originally designed for the urgent North West Nightingale Field Hospital almost 35 years later. One of Steve’s first projects at S I Sealy was working on the electrical design of The Grand Hotel Brighton which was rebuilt after the terrorist attack on the 12th October 1984. Since then Steve has worked on some of the most esteemed projects at S I Sealy such as the Co-op HQ, Radius Campus, Gidlow Mills Technical College, Barton Moss Secure Care Centre and Ampleforth College whilst being responsible for Health and Safety within the Practice, and our CDM systems.

Mike Robinson, Principal Electrical Engineer

Mike first joined S I Sealy straight from School as a Trainee Electrical Engineer in 1983. At this time there were no computers in the office, drawings were produced by hand on architectural tracing paper and specifications were typed on a mechanical typewriter. Mike worked at the Practice for a few years before leaving in 1993 and then returning to S I Sealy in 1995. Mike has delivered over 25 care homes, over 50 schools, 300 JD stores from Aberdeen to Plymouth throughout the years. He has worked as the lead electrical engineer for some of the most prestigious projects at S I Sealy such as the Palace of Westminster, the Manchester Corn Exchange and Sir Paul Smiths flagship Mayfair store.

Mike commented: “I have enjoyed my time at S I Sealy and think that the main reason why is due to the people I have worked with over the years. There has always been a good team spirit where everybody is prepared to discuss each other’s projects and give advice where applicable. This starts with the Directors who always give their support and backing to resolve any issues that may arise on a project.”
