National Apprenticeship Week 2025

The annual National Apprenticeship Week is now in its 17th year. It’s a chance for young people to find out more about apprenticeships to help them make informed decisions while showcasing the positive impact these programs have on communities and local businesses. By participating in apprenticeships, individuals can enhance their skills and knowledge in their chosen fields, paving the way for a fulfilling career while helping employers future-proof their businesses.

This year’s theme is ‘Skills for life’, focusing on the lasting impact apprenticeships have on personal growth, workforce development, and the broader economy.

At S I Sealy, we have a long and proud tradition of training our staff to become exceptional building services engineers. We believe that working with apprentices is an effective way to develop a fully qualified and skilled workforce.

To celebrate #NAW2025, we sat down with our Electrical Engineer, Sam Hewitt, who is currently pursuing a Degree Apprenticeship in Building Services Engineering, to hear about his experience.

What are you studying?

I am currently in my first year of a degree apprenticeship in Building Services Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University, having completed my Higher National Certificate last year at Salford College, all with the support of S I Sealy.

Any advice for people looking to do an apprenticeship in your field?

I chose to take an apprenticeship because, as an electrical engineer, I wanted to enhance my understanding of engineering as a whole. I felt that an apprenticeship would provide me with valuable hands-on experience and a deeper insight into various aspects of the field, ultimately helping me to become a more well-rounded professional.

What are the most valuable skills you’ve developed undertaking an apprenticeship?

Through my apprenticeship, I have developed a greater appreciation for the mechanical aspects of projects. I’ve also gained a better understanding of procurement methods and contracts, which has been invaluable when delivering live projects, understanding the client’s needs, and working within the budget.

What is the impact of your apprenticeship training, and how will this help you achieve your career goals?

My apprenticeship has greatly contributed to my professional development. It has allowed me to appreciate and understand the broader design team, including the processes they follow and how each role contributes to the overall success of the projects I work on. Additionally, it has provided me with the knowledge I need to assist on other aspects if needed.

Have you got any advice for people looking to do an apprenticeship in your field?

If you’re considering an apprenticeship in this field, I highly recommend pursuing a degree apprenticeship. It not only allows you to meet new people but also provides invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience. Plus, you’ll be working towards your degree qualification and can achieve Incorporated Engineer status after successfully completing the end-point assessment process. It’s a fantastic way to kickstart your career while continuing your education.
